Denzel Hayes Washington Jr. was born on December 28, 1954, in Mount Vernon, New York. His father was a Pentecostal minister, and his mother owned a beauty salon. After his parents' divorce when he was 14, he was sent to a private prep school, where he developed discipline and leadership skills.
